Woodland Walk & Enchanted Dell - set amongst the wooded hillside at Carnglaze is a magical collection of limited edition bronze faeries, mushrooms & dragons. Walk through the terraced garden to see Shanhara and her friends, where seasonal streams and a waterfall add to the enchantment. Then follow the woodland path to a panoramic view of St Neot village before looping back to the main site: a round walk of approx 25 mins or longer if you are counting the faeries! In spring the woodlands have a spectacular carpet of 3 acres of bluebells and other seasonal wild flowers. The Woodland Walk is also open on Tuesday evenings during the flowering of the bluebells for those who would like to enjoy the early evening perfume at its best.
Dogs - on leads with careful owners are welcome at all times in all our outdoor areas (due to Health & Safety dogs are not allowed underground, with the exception of assistance dogs). Dog waste is composted on site - please use our biodegradable doggy bags available from shop & ticket office, and the doggy waste bin provided.
The Rum Store - during the Second World War the Royal Navy used the first cavern at Carnglaze to store its supply of rum. Now home to a unique collection of South West minerals, this chamber has now been converted into an auditorium with seating for 400. The slate walls and roof form a stunning backdrop for events, making this a unique venue. Due to the shape and height of the cavern, the acoustics are outstanding and have been acclaimed by many of the local and international artists who have performed here. There is a fully licensed bar open on concert nights, and a catering unit in the gardens serving snack food at most events.
A variety of concerts are planned throughout the year offering a selection of musical presentations with performers from across the musical spectrum. There is also a twice yearly Crystals and Crafts Show and an annual fireworks display. Concert goers come from all over the country and from as far as Japan!
Educational Visits - we welcome specifically educational visits to support work in conjunction with elements of the national curriculum such as Geography, Science and History. We can tailor a tour to suit, if required: “Rocks & Soils” (Key Stage 2) is especially popular.
Weddings - approval for civil weddings has been granted in four separate locations: inside The Rum Store; beside the Subterranean Lake; in the Vine Conservatory; and in the Enchanted Dell. These are four unique locations to “tie the knot” and are becoming increasingly popular with those couples looking for somewhere a little different. Please contact us for a separate brochure for weddings at Carnglaze or talk to the staff in the ticket office or shop. Weddings have not gone out of style they have just gone underground!
Directions - Carnglaze Caverns can best be found off the A38. From Liskeard, there are brown tourist signs directing to Carnglaze just before Trago Mills. From Bodmin the signs are just past Trago Mills!
From the A30, turn off at the sign for Colliford Lake and follow the signs to St Neot. Carnglaze is about a mile south of the village, on the left.
(Routes are highlighted in red on the map below.)
Access - There is a free on site car park and a dedicated coach park area. Due to the nature of the site, specific areas of the gardens and the lower caverns have limited access to some people of lower mobility and wheelchair users. The first cavern, The Rum Store, is fully accessible for all persons, including wheelchair users, and an adapted group tour can be offered by prior arrangement.
Tours Underground - there are three caverns of cathedral proportions, hand created by local slate miners. During your tour you will go about 150m into the hillside and 60m below ground, via a flight of 60 steps. In the lower chambers you will find the subterranean lake with it’s crystal clear blue/green water. For much of the year you will be equipped to go on a self-guided tour of the three caverns but in high season guided tours may be in operation as there is a limit on numbers allowed in the lower caverns at one time. The Caverns are at a constant 10°C, so a jumper and sensible footwear are recommended.
Walled Garden - our Crystals & Crafts Shop sells a variety of local crafts, minerals, faeries, fossils & fudge. A booklet on the history of the Caverns, written by Alan Pascoe, grandson of the last mine captain, is also available. There is a refreshment area with vending machines giving hot & cold drinks and snacks, and picnic tables are available both undercover and on the lawn. Please help us reduce our carbon footprint by making use of our recycling facilities.
Coach Parties & Group Tours – we welcome group bookings by prior arrangement, including evenings, throughout the year. Groups of 20 or more, paying as one, attract a 10% discount. Please ring for further information, prices or to book a group tour on 01579 320251.
