For those who have been waiting for the March newsletter, yes we know it is late but this is for a reason!
At a presentation on the 13th of March, Carnglaze Caverns were formally accepted to be part of Cornwall Mining World Heritage. For more details of do visit www.cornish-mining.org.uk. This is a great honour for us as Carnglaze Caverns as Carnglaze is the only place where slate was quarried and mined underground in Cornwall.
So as the Easter break approaches, why not come and see us. At Carnglaze you will find out about the miners' ingenuity and skills, and how slate roofed the Industrial Revolution. You will go on a self-guided underground tour (may be guided in high seasons) to learn how the mine was worked, ending at the Underground Lake with its crystal clear blue/green water. Browse the comprehensive collection of minerals mined and quarried in the South West, after which you will descend a flight of 60 steps taking you about 150m into the hillside and 60m below ground.
The Caverns are open for tours from 10:00 till 17:00 Monday to Saturday and entry costs are only £6 for adults £4 for children and senior citizens and £17.50 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) Carnglaze Caverns is a constant 10°C underground, cool in Summer, warmer in Winter! A jumper and sensible footwear are recommended. As the Caverns are underground it makes for an ideal wet weather activity.
During the Second World War, the Royal Navy used the first of three caverns at Carnglaze to store its supply of rum. Now known as The Rum Store, it was converted into an auditorium, with seating for 400. The slate walls and roof form a stunning backdrop for performances, making this a unique venue. Due to the shape and height of the cavern, the acoustics are outstanding and are acclaimed by many of the international performers who have been to Carnglaze. In April 2013 we have three concerts.

Friday 19th April 8pm Crowns ~ with support in association with EventHeads
Having scrubbed the decks of Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, Mike Davies and Xfm’s John Kennedy with their debut single ‘Kissing Gates’ – the good ship Crowns sets sail to Cornwall to appear at Carnglaze Caverns for the first time. Crowns are a folk punk band from Launceston, Cornwall, formed in 2010. The band consists of lead singer and guitarist Bill Jefferson, bass player Jake Butler, mandolinist Jack Speckleton and drummer Nathan Haynes.
Their debut album - Stitches in the Flag - is out now and showcases the best of the Cornish boy’s shanty-esque folk-punk racket, crashing mercilessly from verse to chorus and leaving little room to catch your breath. Crowns rabble-rousing originals sit side-by-side with traditional Cornish tune ‘Bodmin Town’ - which has been dragged up from the old cobbled streets right into the 21st Century.
The anthemic 'In full Swing' will get everyone in ear-shot moving and shout-a-long ‘She Swears Like a Sailor’ is one for the ladies. That is - if the ladies are foul-mouthed and can ‘drink you under the table’. Continuing to strengthen their reputation as a formidable live act, last year saw Crowns deliver a series of headline shows in London and the South-West including a high energy set at Looe Music Festival in September 2012 to a 5,000+ crowd.
See them at this 'up-close and intimate, upbeat and shouty' gig at Carnglaze Caverns in April. Only 400 tickets available so don't miss out.
Tickets £14.50 from Carnglaze or www.crowns-at-carnglaze.eventbrite.co.uk
Friday 26th April 8pm Tango in the Night ~ play Fleetwood Mac
Tango in the Night’ are truly a spectacular Fleetwood Mac tribute band. These talented musicians, now all living in Cornwall, have an authentic sound and look that keeps the excitement of Fleetwood Mac alive!
The band features Kenny Barnes, as ‘Lindsey Buckingham’ and ‘Peter Green’, who has been a professional in the music industry for 35 years and trained at the Royal Northern College of Music. Esther Baker has an exceptional voice and is the ultimate authentic sounding ‘Stevie Nicks’. She has sung an eclectic range of styles, from Soul, Jazz/Swing and Gospel over her 20-year career.
Rachel Macdonald is the band’s other female vocalist and keyboard player who embraces the role of ‘Christine McVie’. She has a degree in music from Bretton Hall (Leeds). She is a teacher of piano and woodwind instruments, and is also a singer and songwriter for 3 of her own albums. Steve Yendell is a former professional session musician and avid Fleetwood Mac fan; his talent on the bass guitar is second to none in his on-stage role as ‘John McVie’. Norman Gawel has a drumming career spanning 25 years in many rock bands and revives ‘Mick Fleetwood’s’ role.
The band’s attention to detail and ability to emulate Fleetwood Mac’s music makes them a ‘must see’ band. Enjoy the journey. Enjoy the night! You’ll be amazed when you realize just how many Fleetwood Mac songs you know and love!
