Together the ‘white voice’ singing of Ola Kozioł and the drones and overtones of Andrew Dixon’s bass monolin evoke an atmospheric vision of a humanless future. The improvised performance at the Underground Lake is Mutant Goat’s first UK appearance.
Andrew Dixon, formerly of Plymouth/Saltash band Rolling Head, later played a self-made bass monolin with a variety of improv musicians in the Sheffield-based ParaMusic Ensemble.
Subsequent wanderings and pure chance led to meeting Ola Kozioł in Poland with her incredible vocal technique derived from the traditional folk singing of Poland and Eastern Europe. This archaic ‘scream-singing’ (śpiewokrzyk in Polish) is a technique whereby air is pushed slowly by the diaphragm while the throat stays completely open. Using all the body’s resources as membranes, the singer gives the sound maximum clarity and strength, while producing a strong, raw and dirty sound. Ola is a co-founder of Miejskie Darcie Pierza, a group that cultivates archaic singing traditions, in which she appears as Helena Miłość; she is also a member of the Chorea Theatre choir.
The set-up is bare. The sole instrument is a slender, 6ft maple “off-cut”, strung with a double bass E-string, played through a delay. Ola has only her voice. But these minimal elements combine to
create dense layers of sound. Expect long tones that reverberate around this cavern deep in the belly of the Earth, this Earth that we pollute and that will soon evict us. Expect silence. This theme is the premise of Mutant Goat’s CD, Yonder, recorded in a Łódż studio and launched at this performance in a limited edition of 200 with sleeves hand-made by Ola. Given the theme of Yonder, the Underground Lake is a significant venue for this performance.

IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE
There are 60 steps down to the Lakeside and safety helmets must be worn to access it, although they may be removed for the actual performance once seated. We recommend warm clothing, sensible footwear and a cushion to sit on. Alcohol is not permitted in the lower Caverns (the bar will not be open for this occasion) but hot chocolate, tea and coffee will be available.

As Carnglaze is a Tourist Attraction during the day we close the site to the public at 5pm (8pm August)
The gates will then open an hour before the performance is due to start. Please see your tickets for the performance time.
Your pre-ordered tickets will arrive by post and have a compliment slip with a map and site information.
If it is too late to post the tickets to you they may be collected from the Ticket Office on site before the performance.
Seating is unreserved so it is a case of first come first served!
If you need Low Mobility Parking please inform us at the time of booking as spaces are limited and must be pre-booked.
Please remember this IS a cavern and the temperature remains at 10 deg C all year round, so warm clothing and a cushion are recommended.
We are a rural site so strong shoes and a small torch are also recommended.
